The tremendous victory that she is referring to is Elizabeth becoming the 10th municipality in New Jersey to provide paid sick leave to its employees. Kudos to the hardworking people of Elizabeth as their efforts played a key role in getting the new ordinance passed. Residents provided well over the required number of signatures to get the ordinance on the ballot and voters came out in droves to ensure it was approved.
Starting March 2, 2016, private-sector workers will now accrue up to an hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. There will be a 40 hour per year cap for workers at businesses with ten or more employees and 24 hour per year cap for those at businesses having nine or fewer employees. In addition, those working "directly in contact with the public" in jobs like food service or daycare would be able to accrue 40 hours per year regardless of the number of employees.
